ABERDEEN, S.D. Northern State University sophomore forward Mikayla Barondeau (Frederick, S.D.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII First Team Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The 6-1 sophomore is holding a perfect 4.0 GPA while double-majoring in English and Business, with a minor in Spanish.

Barondeau is leading the team in rebounding (9.9 RPG, #22 in the country) and steals (1.5 SPG), and is second on the team in scoring (13.0 PPG) and assists (2.0 APG).

In conference games, however, Barondeau steps up her game even more, and is currently 12th in the conference averaging 14.3 points per game in NSIC contests.  She’s fourth in the conference in rebounding, averaging 9.7 boards per game in the NSIC.  She’s tied for 13th in the NSIC in assists per game with an average of 3.15 per game, and is tied for 15th in steals per game with her 1.54 per game average.  She’s also sixth in the NSIC in free throw percentage, shooting 88.1% from the line, and she’s also 15th in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio with a 1.28 ratio.

She was named NSIC Player of the Week on November 30th after her record-breaking performance at the NSIC Holiday Hoops Fest in Sioux Falls on November 28-29.  She set a new all-time NSU rebounding mark in the Wolves’ 64-60 loss to #6 Minnesota State Saturday, grabbing 22 boards to break the record of 21 by Myrna Becker that had stood since 1979.

For the weekend she averaged 12.5 points, 17.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 3.0 steals and 39.5 minutes of action per game in helping the Wolves to a 1-1 mark

Barondeau also set a new precedent in Northern State women’s basketball against Bemidji State on 1/15/10 when she recorded the first 20-20 night in the history of the school.  She finished with 22 points and 20 rebounds, giving her the fifth double double of her season and 11th in her career.  As of now, she has six double doubles on the year and 12 in her short career.

Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
