Athletes of the Week
Emily Becken
Women's Basketball
Emily  Becken notched her first double-double of the season with a 17-point, 11-assist effort in the Wolves' 76-65 win over the University of Mary.  Becken was one of four Wolves in double figures in scoring and one of three players to notch a double-double, marking the first time that has happened this season.  NSU has now won four straight games.

Jordan King
Men's Basketball
Jordan King (G, 6-0, 180, Jr., Arlington, S.D./Arlington HS) led an NSU comeback effort against the University of Mary with a career-high 16 points on Saturday despite playing just 17 minutes of the game.  King drained four of eight 3-point attempts, including several late treys to keep the Wolves in contention.  He was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line while dishing out five assists and coming up with one of the team’s three steals.

FARGO, N.D. –
The Northern State University track and field squad kicked off the 2010 indoor season on Sunday at the North Dakota State Bison Classic, coming away with solid performances both on the track and in the field events.

Senior Amanda Madden provided the highlight of the day for the Wolves, as she won the women’s weight throw with an NCAA automatic qualifying toss of 18.08 meters (59 feet, 4 inches).  That mark, a mere two centimeters off her personal best, leads both the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and NCAA Division II national performance lists.

Madden was one of three Wolves to make the finals in the weight throw, joined by sophomore Melodi Boke (7th, 42-10.75) and senior Katie Smith (9th, 41-4.50).

Madden was also second in the shot put with a mark of 12.09 meters (39-8).

Junior Calvin McGruder and newcomer Trevor Mau added some spark to the men’s side of the field events.  McGruder finished second in the high jump and ninth in the long jump, clearing 1.94 meters (6 feet, 4 ¼ inches) in the high jump.  That effort puts him third on the NSIC performance list.  His mark of 6.58 meters (21-7.25) in the long jump is good for tenth on the conference list in that event.

Mau, who set the Barnett Center and school record during NSU’s pre-season intra-squad meet back in December, finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.04 meters (23-1.25), just four centimeters off the NCAA’s provisional qualifying standard.

Fellow newcomer Jacob Arechigo also got a solid start to his collegiate career, claiming fifth place in a 21-man field in the 800 meter run.  Arechigo clocked in at 2:00.22, the fifth best time in the conference this season.  Arechigo also led off NSU’s 4x400 meter relay that finished fifth out of 16 teams at Sunday’s meet with a time of 3:28.64.

Junior Montrel Richardson notched fourth and sixth place finishes in the 60 and 200 meter dashes, respectively.  Richardson, also a standout running back on NSU’s football team, registered a time of 6.98 seconds in the 60 meter finals.  He then clocked in at 22.99 seconds in the 200 meter dash.

The Wolves are back on the track on Thursday, taking on Jamestown College in a scored dual meet.  Field events are slated to start at 5 p.m. in the Barnett Center.
