ABERDEEN, S.D. –
Northern State University sophomore Kailee Hyland scored her first goal of the season in the first half to give the Wolves the lead, and fellow sophomore Lexi Jares nailed her first tally of the year in the second half to make sure it stayed that way, as the Wolves claimed a 2-0 win over Jamestown College on Friday.

The win, which came during NSU’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness match, gave the Wolves their first notch in the win column on the young season.  Jamestown fell to 0-3-1 with the non-conference loss.

Hyland’s goal, which came at the 29:21 mark, came after the Jimmies stole the ball from forward Kaylee McDonald, but instead of clearing the ball, played it back to Hyland in front of the net.  Hyland picked up the loose ball and slipped it past a diving Angela Vaches and into the net for the game’s first goal and the Wolves’ first lead of the year.

The shot was one of seven shots on goal for the Wolves in the period.  NSU outshot Jamestown by an 18-1 margin in the first half and a 28-4 count on the night.

Still leading by the single tally in the second half, the Wolves capitalized on a golden opportunity in the 66th minute of play in the second half.  Senior midfielder Stephanie Connolly played a long ball through the middle that was picked up on the left side by freshman midfielder Renee Gittings.  Gittings then centered a short cross for a streaking Jares, who tapped the ball past the defense and into the right side of the net for the insurance goal.

NSU came close on several other shots throughout the night, sending at least four shots sailing just over the crossbar.  In all, the Wolves managed 10 shots on goal, while junior goalkeeper Dee Wood did not have to make a single save on the night.

The Wolves will try to make it two in a row on Sunday, as they take on Nebraska-Kearney, facing the first-year program for the first time in school history.  The Lopers fell to MSU Moorhead earlier in the day and are now 1-2 on the season heading into Sunday’s match.  Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Jerde Field.
