ST. PAUL, Minn. - Northern State senior
Adam Kampsen had a profound showing in the final doubleheader of his career against Concordia-St. Paul (24-14, 16-10 NSIC) on Sunday. He hit a total of five homeruns with 11 RBI's in the two games. Northern took game one 15-4 and fell 5-10 in the second game. The Wolves finish the 2008 season 15-28 overall and 11-21 in the NSIC.
NSU VS. CSP GAME 1 BOX SCORE
In an offensive explosion, the Wolves peppered 18 hits around the field, including five that went out of the field, in a 15-4 downing of the Golden Bears. Although there were many highlight players,
Adam Kampsen stood out from them all as he went 4-for-4 at the plate with two-run homeruns in his first three at-bats.
Kampsen's three homerun, six RBI game was followed closely by
Aaron Kappes, who hit two homeruns and had four RBI's.
The Wolves scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings. The top three batters in the lineup, Kappes,
Andrew Lunsetter and Kampsen, combined for 11 RBI's and ten runs scored, and went 10-for-14 at the plate.
The Golden Bears hit back-to-back solo homeruns to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, but it was the largest rally the team could scrounge up.
Tyler Bauman improved to 3-3 on the year as he took the win from the rubber. He struck out four batters and received plenty of run support to cover the four earned runs given up.
NSU VS. CSP GAME 2 BOX SCORE
Homeruns and extra base hits dictated much of the second game, but this time the tables were turned as the Golden Bears hit four balls over the fence and also hit four doubles in a 10-5 win. The Wolves led early on, receiving another two-run dinger from Kampsen in the first inning. The CSP pitching staff finally got the Wolves under control, however, and allowed just one baserunner in the next three innings.
The Golden Bears mounted their comeback in the third inning, hitting back-to-back solo homers and going up 3-2 before the frame ended. A three-run homer put CSP up 6-2 in the fourth, but Kampsen kept the Wolves in the game with a three-run homer of his own in the top of the fifth to set the score at 6-5. CSP kept knocking the ball around and put another four runs on the board before ultimately taking the 10-5 win.
Kampsen was 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in all five of the team's runs. He leads the NSIC in homeruns (15) and RBI's (57).
Matt Geissler had two hits as well, punching the ball through the middle of the field in both cases.
Derek Hoellein (1-1) took the loss, throwing four innings and giving up seven earned runs.
