Huskies Overpower Wolves En Route To 33-6 Win

FULL SCORECARD

ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State's grapplers returned to action following a four-week hiatus only to be overpowered by 18th-ranked St. Cloud State, 33-6.  NSU's Corbin Surat started the dual off with an exciting 4-2 to give the Wolves the lead, but the Huskies responded by winning eight of the next nine matches.  The Wolves are 3-3 on the year, while St. Cloud State improves to 5-0.

Phillip Downs is 3-0 on the year
Surat (125-lb.) overcame a 2-1 first period deficit late in the match.  With under 30 seconds remaining, Surat managed an escape and turned around for a takedown to nab the lead and gain the 4-2 win.  Phillip Downs(165-lb.) secured NSU's other win of the night.  Downs scored the first points of the match with a second period reversal.  Late in the final period, SCSU's Anderson tied the score with his own reversal, but Downs earned an escape just before the buzzer to take the 3-2 win.

Ryan Larsen
also had an exciting match at the 149-lb. class, fighting through the final seconds to tie the score, but SCSU's Kubasch held on for the 7-6 win.

Cale Cornemann (184-lb.) suffered his first loss in dual competition.  He led 2-0 following the first period and went into the third period with the score knotted up 3-3 with #6 Brad Padgett.  It looked as if the match would go into overtime, but Padgett took down Cornemann late in the period and walked away with a pin with just 15 seconds remaining.

The Wolves head to Brookings for a dual with South Dakota State on Friday, January 18.  They return home to take on their first NSIC opponent on Wednesday, January 23, hosting MSU Moorhead at Wachs Arena.
